Two Influential Tv Execs To Quit

Two prominent TV executives announced today (Monday) that they plan to step down Brian Lamb of C-SPAN and Mark Thompson of the BBC. Lamb, who founded the nonprofit cable network in 1978, said that he will turn over the reins to C-SPAN execs Rob Kennedy and Susan Swain. In an interview with The New York Times Lamb noted that the channel is now being challenged by increasing competition from Congress, which makes available coverage of its own sessions and hearings online. Such competition, he said, was "the last thing I expected to have happen." But the competition may have a positive aspect, he indicated. "We really have to be nimble, in ways we didn't when we were the only game in town." Meanwhile, Thompson, the director-general of the BBC since 2004, said that he plans to leave following the London Olympics in The Fall. In a message to staff, he said (with "some understatement," noted Britain's Guardian newspaper) "We've weathered a series of lively storms and been through some trying as well as some very successful times together."
