Tv - Tv Bosses Address Controversial Rowan Atkinson Joke

British Tv bosses have insisted Rowan Atkinson "did not mean to cause any offence" by using bad language during a controversial comedy skit for a charity telethon.

The Mr. Bean actor was among the stars who took part in the U.K.'s Comic Relief fundraiser on Friday (15Mar13), dressing up as the Archbishop of Canterbury for a comedy routine.

However, Atkinson's contribution sparked numerous complaints as he joked: "Jesus said love your neighbours... but it doesn't mean s**g your neighbours".

Bbc bosses have now addressed the controversy, insisting the funnyman did not intend to offend viewers.

A spokesman says, "Rowan is well known for his comedy characters and this was an affectionate portrayal of an Archbishop figure, which was intended to amuse and entertain. We did not mean to cause any offence."

Officials at U.K. watchdog Ofcom are now said to be looking into the complaints.

Member of Parliament (Mp) John Whittingdale, chairman of the House of Commons' culture, media and sport select committee, adds, "I'm pleased the Bbc has recognised this was a mistake and whether Ofcom decides to investigate further is a matter up to them."
