The third instalment of the Michael Bay-directed action movie - which stars Shia LaBeouf and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley - has so far grossed $338 million in the US and $663 million internationally, following its release at the start of last month.

Brad Grey - Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Paramount Pictures, who made the movie - said: "'Transformers: Dark of the Moon' is the first billion dollar grossing movie in the history of Paramount Pictures, marking a substantial milestone in the 99 year life of this legendary studio.

"We are grateful for the extraordinary work of Michael Bay and his film-making team, executive producer Steven Spielberg, and everyone at Paramount around the globe who played a part in helping make this latest 'Transformers' one of the 10 highest grossing films worldwide of all time."

The movie - which was produced by Don Murphy & Tom DeSanto, Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Ian Bryce - also starred Josh Duhamel, John Turturro, Tyrese Gibson, Patrick Dempsey, Kevin Dunn, Julie White with John Malkovich and Frances McDormand.

A number of films have passed the $1 billion mark in the last year, including 'Alice in Wonderland' and 'Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides'.
