Tracy Morgan Under Fire For Gay Remarks

An anti-gay tirade by 30 Rock costar Tracy Morgan during a stand-up performance in Nashville has set off a firestorm of controversy that could cost Morgan his job. "'Born this way' is bulls**t. Gay is a choice," Morgan reportedly told the audience. Homosexuality, he went on, is "something kids learn from the media" and if his son ever told him he was gay, he would pull out a knife and stab him to death. As for bullying, he said that kids who are victims "should just bust some ass and beat those other little f**kers that bully them, not whine about it." On Sunday, Morgan issued an apology saying, "I'm not a hateful person and don't condone any kind of violence against others. While I am an equal opportunity jokester, and my friends know what is in my heart, even in a comedy club this clearly went too far and was not funny in any context." But 30 Rock creator and star Tina Fey commented, "The violent imagery of Tracy's rant was disturbing to me at a time when homophobic hate crimes continue to be a life-threatening issue for the GLBT community." However, she added, Morgan's comments don't "line up with the Tracy Morgan I know, who is not a hateful man." NBC Chairman Robert Greenblatt issued a statement saying that Morgan's comments "reflect negatively on both 30 Rock and NBC -- two very all-inclusive and diverse organizations -- and we have made it clear to him that this kind of behavior will not be tolerated." But Nia Vardalos, best known as the star of My Big Fat Greek Wedding , posted a commentary on the Huffington Post, which said, "I'm sorry someone can stand on a stage, spew violent, hateful words and images, then issue an apology, be described as not-really-like-that by his employers and co-workers, and go back to work."
