Townshend Wanted To Play Tommy
PETE TOWNSHEND was destined to play TOMMY in THE WHO's rock opera movie of the same name - until he noticed the change in bandmate ROGER DALTREY when he took on the lead role.
The guitarist created the Tommy concept album with himself in mind as the troubled, blind pinball wizard, but quickly realised Daltrey needed the role more than he did.
Townshend says, "I was supposed to be Tommy in the story; I was supposed to sing Tommy and Roger decided that he would be Tommy.
"Suddenly, he became that different kind of singer with the quality he now has, which he is engaging the audience and smiling and opening his body to them - that kind of JIM MORRISON 'take me', that kind of nakedness onstage.
"Instead of being a tight, little, 'I'm a vicious mug, don't get in my way,' guy, he suddenly opened up."
