Top London Rock Venue Under Threat

A fierce campaign has been launched to save the London rock venue where KYLIE MINOGUE made her first live performance since recovering from cancer earlier this year (JUN06), after plans to turn the Astoria into luxury apartments were revealed. The famously shabby but much-loved venue has played host to stars including NIRVANA, THE ROLLING STONES, MADONNA and CHRISTINA AGUILERA, as well as its legendary G-A-Y club night. But the venue's lease, which is owned the Mean Fiddler group's parent company Live Nation, is due to expire in December 2008. Two students, SARAH TENNANT and JADE DICKINSON, have launched a campaign to save the club - and 15,000 people have already signed their petition. Tennant says, "It has always been the premier venue of its size in London. When a band is just about to get really big or popular, they play the Astoria." Live Nation spokesperson CHRISTINE GORHAM says, "We have a long-term lease with them and we are very happy to operate from there and work with the owners of the actual building. We have no say as to what their plans are. "Our aim is to provide the best possible entertainment for the consumer. We can't get involved in other areas, especially when we are not the ones making the ultimate decision."
