Tom Odell has become the first male recipient to win the BRITs Critics' Choice award for 2013.
Tom Odell has won the BRITs Critics' Choice award.
The 22-year-old singer-songwriter - who studied at Brighton Institute of Modern Music in Sussex, South East England - is the first male recipient of the title after beating fellow nominees AlunaGeorge and Laura Mvula.
Tom was unable to contain his happiness at being given the prestigious title and took to his Twitter account to thank his fans for their support.
He posted: ''I feel very very honoured to win the Brits Critic Choice award, and I genuinely can't believe it. Thankyou for all your support xxxxxxx (sic)''
Tom released his debut EP 'Songs From Another Love' last month before he made his first TV appearance on 'Later With Jools Holland', where he spoke about his then nomination.
He said: ''I feel privileged to be in the same company as previous nominees of the calibre of Adele, Emeli Sande and Michael Kiwanuka.''
Semi-retired singer Lily Allen signed the up-and-coming musician to her label ITNO and was taken aback at how talented he is on stage, comparing him to David Bowie.
She recently revealed: ''He was discovered by a friend of mine. I went to see him play and signed him to my label straight away. His voice if fragile yet powerful and he sings mainly love songs.
''I'm not usually a massive fan of singer-songwriter stuff, but when I saw him live his energy onstage reminded me of David Bowie. It's not soppy and moany at all, it's energetic and insightful. And he's totally gorgeous as well! Blond hair and blue eyes, and simply just lovely.''
Tom will receive his gong at the BRIT Awards on February 20 2013 in London.
