The 'Dark Knight Rises' actor has signed up to star as Special Agent Sam Fisher in the big screen adaptation the popular video game, which is being produced by Ubisoft Motion Pictures.
Jean-Julien Baronnet, CEO of Ubisoft Motion Pictures, said: ''Tom Hardy is currently one of the biggest talents in the film industry, and he has a phenomenal ability to take on complex and varied roles with his broad range of acting skills.
''His involvement in the Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell movie is exciting news for movie and video game fans alike.''
Tom's character is a highly-trained special operative who combats terrorism as part of a fictional group called Echelon, Variety.com has confirmed.
'The International' screenwriter Eric Singer is already on board and Jean is looking forward to his ''fresh'' take on the feature.
He explained: ''Eric Singer is one of the most talented writers of the moment, and ... we're confident he'll bring a fresh approach and create a thrilling story ... while still respecting all the codes and traditions of the franchise that are so important to fans.''
The popular game has sold over 23 million copies since its debut in 2002 and although no director and studio have been confirmed as yet, Ubisoft are reportedly in talks with Warner Bros. and Paramount.
Ubisoft have already confirmed a film version of their 'Assassin's Creed' game, starring Michael Fassbender.
