The Mission: Impossible star was in Iceland shooting his upcoming sci-fi thriller Oblivion when Holmes moved to end their five-year marriage last week (28Jun12), but he headed back home on Tuesday morning so he could be in familiar surroundings as he marked what will likely be a sombre 50th birthday.

Cruise was spotted boarding his private jet at Reykjavik airport on a flight bound for California, according to UsMagazine.com.

The Hollywood actor had previously planned on spending his milestone birthday enjoying the great outdoors in Iceland with his wife, revealing, "We'll be in Iceland on the actual day. We like hiking, and so we'll have some nice hikes."

Meanwhile, Holmes, who has already been spotted out without her wedding ring, has been keeping herself busy in New York - she filmed a guest spot on U.S. TV show Project Runway: All Stars on Monday (02Jul12) and has reportedly moved her belongings into a new apartment in the city, where she is now living with the former couple's six-year-old daughter Suri.
