Titanic 3d: Did Kate Winslet Stalk Cameron For Part?
Following the release of Titanic 3D, lead actress Kate Winslet has denied she "stalked" director James Cameron to win the part of Rose back in the 1990's. Articles appearing when the epic romance was first released suggested the British actress flooded Cameron with phone calls and letters until he relented.
Speaking to USA Today, the actress denied the story, explaining, "I wouldn't do that. It's not my style". The 36-year-old did own up to sending the director a bouquet of roses with a note signed "From Your Rose", three days after she auditioned in Los Angeles and before she landed the part, saying, "A lot of my contemporaries were much more likely candidates. I got lucky". Those contemporaries included Uma Thurman, Gwyneth Paltrow and Winona Ryder but of course, it was Winslet who eventually landed the role and went on to become an Oscar winning actress. From Cameron's point of the view, the director says he was lucky to find the perfect rose, saying, "Kate had a powerful intelligence and strength of personality. And a vulnerability. People have a glossy memory about the film, but her character is at the brink of suicide at one point. I knew whoever I cast would have to carry the movie on her shoulders, although Kate did feel a bit lost and overwhelmed by the magnitude".
Winslet and co-star Leonardo Dicaprio have stayed close since appearing in the smash-hit movie, though the actor was unable to attend the 3D premiere in London last week because of commitments to Quentin Tarantino's movie Django Unchained.
