Gunn went on to speak intimately about the reasons for his decision not to have sexual intercourse. The main cause of his withdrawal was "very personal", he said; "I was in a very intense relationship for a long time. And my partner ended it, saying that, quite frankly, he was impatient with my sexual performance." The relationship in question ended in the 1980s, at a time when the Aids epidemic was rife and highly publicized. Gunn says that this also contributed to his decision not to have sex: "I think a lot of people simply retreated because they were concerned about their health. I'm happy to be healthy and alive, quite frankly." He added, though that he hasn't completely ruled out the possibility of having an intimate relationship again; "It's not as though I'm some barren forest, he remarked."
