Thompson Backtracks Over 'Stoning' Comments

Actress EMMA THOMPSON has backtracked after mistakenly implying residents of Britain's Isle of Wight regularly "stone homosexuals".
In July (10), the Brit infuriated Isle of Wight residents after joking on America's The Late Late Show that they torture homosexuals on the island off the south coast of England.
She carried on the joke, adding: "I think they are still allowed to flog them, which some of them enjoy. I think they are allowed to shoot Irish or Scottish people if they arrive on the island - it is still in the rules, they are allowed to torture people. It's lovely, you should go."
Now the outspoken Oscar winner has attempted to make amends for her remarks, telling local council leader David Pugh she meant to single out the Isle of Man, in between Britain and Ireland, instead.
In an email to Pugh, she writes: "Thank you so very much for understanding that not only were my remarks on a late night comedy show (comedy being the operative word) but I also mixed up my islands - I think it was the Isle of Man that used to enjoy the privilege of being allowed to shoot Scotsmen if they appeared on the beach."

Shifting the comments dumped on the Isle of Wight to the Isle of Man has only made things worse. Despite her attempts to be an independent radical, Emma's become something of a London snob. A writer ought to be able to watch her words. I see only one solution to her dilemma. After the customary apologies, Emma must make feature films on each island, one with a heroic homosexual on Wight, and another with a heroic Scotsperson on Man.

I would like to say that the people of the Isle of Wight and the Isle of Man NEED TO GROW A BIG, JUICY SENSE OF HUMOR.You're all pills with a big bug up your anal cavaties. LIGHTEN THE HELL UP.Emma Thompson is a national treasure (I wish she lived here, in the U.S...but I'm sure the idiot Tea Partyers and other Conservative nutjobs would find a way to castigate her as well). I'm glad Emma continues to speak her mind, and sprinkle the world with her lovely sense of humor. She was utterly fantastic on Craig Ferguson, as she was a few nights prior on Jay Leno.PM
