Theater Owners Where Did All The People Go?

There was a lot of room to spread out at many theaters over the weekend as the box office plunged by a third from the comparable weekend a year ago. According to box-office tracker Paul Dergarabedian, the top 12 films earned just $97.08 million versus $144.92 million a year ago. Not a single film cracked even the $20-million mark. The closest any film came to that was the $17.6 million earned by Sony/Screen Gem's Think Like a Man , which held on to the No. 1 position for the second straight week. Four other films bunched up closely in second- through fifth-place. Sony/Columbia's animated The Pirates! Band of Misfits docked at No. 2 with $11.14 million, followed by the sixth week of The Hunger Games with $10.814 million, which in turn edged out Warner Bros.' The Lucky One with $10.808 million, a difference of just over $6,000. Universal's The Five-Year Engagement , which had been expected to win the weekend, ended up in fifth place with $10.61 million. Next weekend's debut of the Avengers is expected to earn -- on its own -- more than every film at the box office did this past weekend -- combined.

The top ten films over the weekend, according to final figures compiled by Media by Numbers (figures in parentheses represent total gross to date) 1. Think Like a Man, Sony, $17,604,141, 2 Wks.
