The Soda Debate Comes To Meet The Press

On NBC's Meet the Press on Sunday, moderator David Gregory pressed New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg on his continued effort to make the sale of 32-ounce sodas illegal at theaters, sports arenas, restaurants and pushcarts in the city. How far would the city go to try to ban things that are bad for people to consume? Gregory wanted to know. We're not banning anything, Bloomberg replied, maintaining that a judge erred when he struck down the big-drink law. If you want 32 ounces, take two cupss to your seat. If you want 64 ounces, carry four. But our hope is if you only take one, you won't go back. Gregory pushed back. Would the mayor also ban salt shakers? he asked. We're not banning anything, Bloomberg repeated. All we're trying to do is educate. Gregory remained unconvinced. As the executive of New York City you are telling people what they can and cannot do, he remarked. Why is that government's job to do? Bloomberg denied that the city was telling anyone what to do. We're telling them what science says is in their interest or isn't in their interest, he maintained. (Last year the County of Los Angeles launched a massive billboard campaign, showing a glass containing 22 packages of sugar -- the equivalent of the amount of sugar in a 20-ounce bottle of soda. You wouldn't eat 22 packages of sugar, the ad says. Why would you drink them?)
