The XX have won the Barclaycard Mercury Prize.
The band, from London, scooped the annual prize for the best UK album tonight (07.09.10), picked by an industry panel, beating Paul Weller, who was bookmakerâs favourite to scoop the award.
Accepting the trophy and a cheque for £20,000 from TV presenter Jules Holland, Singer Oliver Sim said: âWell thank you so much. Weâve had the most incredible year and it just felt like everyday weâve woken up to something incredible that we just werenât expecting.
âWeâve felt a bit like being in a haze, and being her feels is like a moment of clarity thatâs just happened.â
The band beat 11 other shortlisted hopefuls to claim the award, in a ceremony held at Londonâs Grosvenor House hotel.
When asked how they will be celebrating their win, Romy said: âWe have a party around the corner for all our friends and family who couldnât make it.
âWe decided to throw a party, win or lose, itâs been such a big year for us, such a short amount of time, but everything has changed so much.â
Previous winners of the Mercury Prize who have gone on to greater success include Primal Scream, Dizzee Rascal, Elbow and Arctic Monkeys.
