The Xx Win Mercury Prize

The XX have won the Barclaycard Mercury Prize.

The band, from London, scooped the annual prize for the best UK album tonight (07.09.10), picked by an industry panel, beating Paul Weller, who was bookmaker’s favourite to scoop the award.

Accepting the trophy and a cheque for £20,000 from TV presenter Jules Holland, Singer Oliver Sim said: “Well thank you so much. We’ve had the most incredible year and it just felt like everyday we’ve woken up to something incredible that we just weren’t expecting.

“We’ve felt a bit like being in a haze, and being her feels is like a moment of clarity that’s just happened.”

The band beat 11 other shortlisted hopefuls to claim the award, in a ceremony held at London’s Grosvenor House hotel.

When asked how they will be celebrating their win, Romy said: “We have a party around the corner for all our friends and family who couldn’t make it.

“We decided to throw a party, win or lose, it’s been such a big year for us, such a short amount of time, but everything has changed so much.”

Previous winners of the Mercury Prize who have gone on to greater success include Primal Scream, Dizzee Rascal, Elbow and Arctic Monkeys.
