The Twilight Saga Breaking Dawn Part 2 Heads Razzie Awards Shortlist (and Why The Critics Hated Them)

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2, one of the most successfully grossing films of last year, heads up the Razzie Awards shortlist for the award no one wants to win – Worst Picture. Whilst the Twilight series has made big name stars out of the likes of Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner and Dakota Fanning, its run of films has consistently been panned by ever more desperate critics, eager to see it fail.

If reviewers haven’t had much luck derailing Twilight’s momentum, though, then they certainly did a good job of blunting the momentum of the others going up against it for this year’s Razzie. The BBC reports that high-profile failures Battleship - a film based on the board game (they probably could’ve predicted that before even going to pre-production) – and Eddie Murphy’s disastrous turn in A Thousand Words are among the contenders, with the Adam Sandler-starring That’s My Boy and sickly kids film The Oogieloves in the Big Balloon Adventure making up the numbers. It’s fair to say that all these movies took quite the tongue-lashing. Here are some choice quotes from the critics:

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 (Rotten Tomatoes Critics Rating: 48%)

“You're going to hear a lot about Breaking Dawn Part 2 being the best of the Twilight movies. That's like saying a simple head cold is preferable to swine flu.” – Rolling Stone

“At a key point, coven leader Aro (Michael Sheen) lets out a spectacular laugh - which nearly drowned out my own.” – Boston Phoenix

Battleship (33%)

“Something of an earnest, two-hour infomercial that should do wonders for naval recruiting if not civilian entertainment.” – The Los Angeles Times

“[It] has a plot as unambitious as a macaroni dinner, familiar and easy to eat and not particularly nutritious.” – The New York Times

The Oogieloves in the Big Balloon Adventure (29%)

“Forget Saw, I'd argue this is the most freakishly disturbing outing of Cary Elwes career.” – NECN

“The road to hell, they say, is paved with good intentions. Walking up that road are The Oogieloves, a trio of the most cloyingly unbearable characters a parent could ever introduce to their preschool child.” – The Salt Lake Tribune

That’s My Boy (21%)

“Another bottom-of-the-barrel raunchfest that is bound to make far more money than such sludge could ever deserve.” – USA Today

I waited until 'tight Tuesdaday' to see it. It was the worst $11.50 I've ever spent. I've bought $11.50 mocktails that gave me more of a buzz than this piece of s***” – The Aristocrat

That's My Boy Trailer

A Thousand Words (0%)

“Eddie Murphy should have just said the word "No" to this tired, formulaic comedy.” – The Hollywood Reporter

“You've got one of the funniest verbal actors in the business in Eddie Murphy, and you put him in a movie where he can't talk. It's already a recipe for disaster.” – Movie Metropolis
