Thomas Berger, Author of 'Little Big Man', Dies 13 Days Short of 90th Birthday 4297683 News

Thomas Berger, the renowned US author best known for his novel Little Big Man - later adapted into a movie starring Dustin Hoffman - has died aged 89. The novelist died in New York state just 13 days before he was due to celebrate his 90th birthday.

Dustin HoffmanDustin Hoffman starred in Thomas Berger's 'Little Big Man'

Little Big Man, about a white boy raised by the Cheyenne nation during the 19th century, reimagined the American West and would prove to be Berger's biggest hit following its release in 1964. The novel became even more popular following the 1970 Hollywood adaptation, which won Dustin Hoffman a BAFTA for best actor.

Berger was responsible for over 20 novels, including The Feud, about a warring Mid-west community. His 1980 bestseller Neighbours was adapted for the big screen, with John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd, though Berger shrugged off claims he was a writer of comedy.

"[I] have never thought of my work as being funny except incidentally. I write as I do because that's the way I instinctively look at things," he said, according to the BBC.

Before a successful career in literature, Berger served in the US army from 1943-46 and used some of his experiences fighting in Europe in his debut novel Crazy in Berlin, published in 1958.

His literary agent Christina Concepcion said Berger had been in failing health for a considerable period.

Most recently, Berger's novel Meeting Evil was adapted 20 years after its publication for a movie starring Samuel L. Jackson and Luke Wilson. It told the story of a family man sucked into a nightmare by a stranger.

Chef 4252068 Film Reviews

Like comfort food, this movie has very little nutritional value, but it sure goes down smoothly. This is one of those shamelessly delicious-looking films that makes our mouths water at the tasty dishes that are lovingly created on-camera. And it also has an array of deeply likeable characters, witty cameos and sparkling dialogue to keep us smiling. So who cares that nothing unexpected happens from start to finish? This is a movie we sit back and enjoy without worrying about the appearance of a plot twist.

The title character is Carl (played by writer-director Jon Favreau), the chef at a top Los Angeles restaurant that is stuck in a rut because the owner (Dustin Hoffman) refuses to change anything on the menu. When a snooty food critic (Oliver Platt) criticises Carl for his tired and predictable cuisine, Carl's reaction sparks an angry Twitter war. In a fit of anger, Carl quits his job then hatches a plan to get back to his roots while bonding with Percy (Emjay Anthony), his pre-teen son with spicy ex-wife Inez (Sofia Vergara). So Carl and his sidekick Martin (John Leguizamo) take Percy to Miami to refurbish food truck and drive back to California, along the way building a reputation and perfecting their Latin-infused menu.

Since a complex plot would just be distracting, this film coasts on the charisma of its likeable cast, throwing in lively side roles for the likes of Scarlett Johansson as a restaurant colleague, Bobby Cannavale as a fellow chef and most memorably Robert Downey Jr. as Inez's hilariously nutty ex. Everyone is relaxed and effortlessly funny, which makes the interaction feel amusing and never remotely forced. While this is easily Favreau's most assured work as a director (that's including the first two Iron Man movies), this is also his most generous performance too. He infuses the whole film with easy-going charm.

Audience members who haven't eaten before seeing this film will be ravenous within minutes. The flavours on screen look mouth-wateringly tasty, and Favreau is clearly enjoying himself as he takes us on a cross-country trip from Cuban specialties in Florida to deep-fried wonders in Louisiana, Texas barbecues and Mexican-fusion dishes in California. This is a film about the joys of cooking rather than of eating, specifically how preparing food brings people together in the kitchen. So even if Carl's Luddite ignorance of social media feels utterly contrived, it makes sense that this provides an opening for Percy to get involved in the family business. And once we see what they're whipping up in the kitchen, we might even believe that Carl could attract women like Vergara and Johansson.

Tilda Swinton, Ed Harris, Alison Pill and John Cho were among the celebrities who turned out this week for the opening night of the Los Angeles Film Festival, which kicked off with the premiere of Bong Joon-ho's futuristic thriller Snowpiercer. It's based on a French comic book and stars Chris Evans, who's currently in London filming Avengers: Age of Ultron. Watch the action-packed trailer and find out more about 'Snowpiercer' here.

'Chef' Trailer: Do Not Watch While Hungry [Trailer + Pictures] 4147286 News

You know the supermarket rule – don’t go food shopping when you’re hungry? Well the same applies to watching the trailer for Jon Favreau’s Chef. The beautifully shot, beautifully prepared food will have you attempting a rare venison sandwich with horseradish foam and wild rocket puree, and we all know that can’t happen.

Chef movieIt's all about the food in 'Chef'

The story for ‘Chef’ sees Carl Casper (Favreau) given an ultimatum: cook Dustin Hoffman’s menu or don’t cook in his restaurant. Of course, the film would be pretty boring if he went ahead gave in to his mean boss, so instead he decides to fall off the wagon somewhat, become the laughing stock of an already snobbish culinary zeitgeist, and win back his respect and friends through an intrepid street food venture.

More: 'Chef' Is A Double Passion Project For Jon Favreau: Food And Film [Clip + Pictures]

It’s fair to say this was a passion project for Favreau, who gave up working on some of the highest grossing movies of all time to focus on art he wanted to make, which – as even the not-so-perceptive of you out there will notice – is a perfect mirror for the plot of Chef, which also stars Scarlett Johansson, Sofia Vergara and Robert Downey Jr. Pretty impressive back book there, Favreau.

Talking about the film that will make you hungry unless you pounce on a Five Guys burger right before you go, Favreau said: "I'm most proud of the fact that it shows there's a recipe for success if you dial into the sh*t that is going to make your life better. It's counterintuitive, but if you take time away from your career and invest it in your personal life, your career flourishes. That's a lesson I've learned a decade ago. That was the real underlying message of the movie." (via The Huffington Post

Since premiering at SXSW, Chef has found love from the critics. It currently holds a ridiculously impressive 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes something we expect to drop. But take nothing away from Favreau; the early signs are indicative of an original, enjoyable movie. As long as you eat something before you see it. There, we said it again.

Scarlett JohanssonScarlett Johansson eating what we presume is not pesto-pasta

Here are some of the critics’ thoughts:

“CHEF is a lot of things - it's fitting that a road trip movie should be so all over the map - but what it is most of all is a celebration of tasty food and the people who make it, and I guess I can get behind that,” wrote Meredith Borders of Badass Digest.

“Chef's delicious nature has left me starving for more - more of Favreau's beautiful, heartfelt storytelling and free creative reign. A true, gourmet treat,” said Matt Donato of We Got This Covered.

“Never relies solely on its tasty-looking food to win over the audience ... and yet, it's probably the best 'foodie' movie since Ratatouille,” wrote ComingSoon.net.

Carl Casper is a chef working at one of the top restaurants of Miami. Food is his ultimate passion in life and so he is utterly heartbroken when his boss forces him to cook a 'safer' menu, bypassing his usually ambitious creations. The change came about when it was found that a formidable food critic would be visiting the establishment, but, as it turns out, the menu switch was a bad idea and Carl doesn't take his subsequent criticism very well at all. After reading his bad review and going viral, he sends out a badly judged post over Twitter and is thus forced to leave his post at the eatery. Instead, he sets up his own food truck, delivering his food on wheels to anyone willing to try a new culinary experience, and along the way uses it to reconnect with his young son and ex-wife.

'Chef' is brilliant comedy about self-discovery, passion and drive. The movie's main star, Primetime Emmy nominated Jon Favreau ('Cowboys & Aliens', 'Iron Man', 'Elf', 'Zathura: A Space Adventure'), was also responsible for the direction, production and screenplay and it made its premiere at the SXSW Film Festival in March. It is due for UK release on June 18th 2014.

Carl Casper is a well-known chef from Miami who works in a trendy LA restaurant much lauded by critics. However, when one particularly formidable critic shows up to taste Casper's food, his culinary creativity is thrown into question when his boss requests he make something a little more 'safe' than his usual creations. Unfortunately for Casper, he doesn't take criticism too well and loses his cool in a tirade which is captured on film and subsequently goes viral across all social mediums. Now jobless and unsure of his own passions, he returns to Miami to set up a food truck by the name of El Jefe Cubanos in a bid to regain some of his ingenuity and, of course, respect. The journey also sees him reconnect with his wealthy ex-wife and young son as the family attempt to rebuild the bonds between them.

'Chef' is a remarkable comedy about one man's journey of self-discovery and respect. It was written, directed and co-produced by Primetime Emmy nominated Jon Favreau ('Cowboys & Aliens', 'Iron Man', 'Elf', 'Zathura: A Space Adventure') who is also the film's main actor alongside stars Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson and Dustin Hoffman. 'Chef' premiered at the SXSW Film Festival on March 9th 2014.

Dustin Hoffman auctions off his prized possessions 3982650 News

Dustin Hoffman is auctioning off a selection of his prized possessions and antiques.

The 76-year-old actor has decided to sell hundreds of items and collectables from his triplex apartment in The San Remo apartment building on Central Park West in Manhattan, New York City.

The 'Meet The Fockers' star has organised over two hundred lots to go under the hammer with Nye & Co including furniture, art and movie paraphernalia from Hoffman's private screening room.

Highlights of the sale include ''a George III leather-upholstered easy chair, a mid-18th century Irish mahogany pier table, a Regency étagère, an oversized gate-leg table and a pair of Chinese pier tables with other examples of Asian furniture.''

The double Academy Award-winner will also be auctioning off collections from high end designers including Cartier, Baccarat, Steuben and Lalique glass and Biedermeier, Stickley and Qing Dynasty furniture.

Although the sale won't include props or memorabilia from his own movies he is offering two autographed and dated movie projectors with reels and lenses as well as black-and-white stills from the 1961 movie 'Lola' directed by Jacques Demy.

The lots also feature a collection of porcelain dolls starting at a mere $25 up to an initial asking price of $1,500.

The auction opened online on December 3, following Dustin's decision to unload his 8,000 square foot luxury apartment - previously home to Steven Spielberg, Steve Martin and Diane Keaton - and will continue until December 17.

Zach Braff's NYC Photobomb Is Pure Internet Gold! [Image] 3968690 News

Zach Braff may have won the award for the finest celebrity photobombing incident of all time, after an image of him cheekily smiling into the camera during a photo shoot for some newlyweds went viral this week. The image was taken in Times Square, New York City, where the newly wedded couple were having their photo taken on one of the crosswalks, only for Braff to walk past at the perfect moment and, if anything, make the wedding photo a million times better.

Zach Braff
Braff, pictured with his pug, has caused an internet storm with the image

The goofy actor was noticed by wedding photographer Sascha Reinking, who upon discovering the image took to Twitter to call out the actor. On Thursday (21 Nov.) the photographer tweeted, "I might be mistaken but I think Zach Braff totally photobombed my newlywed couple. :) #zachbraff #scrubs #photobomb," later tweeting to Braff and congratulating him on a job well done. Braff later tweeted that the picture was "one of my best photobombs ever," and he even took to his FaceBook page to describe the photobombing incident as his "finest to date."

The Scrubs star joins the ranks of Thom Yorke, Dustin Hoffman and Jack Black and Braff's BFF Donald Faison in the realm of exceptional celebrity photobombs, all of which need checking out right this second if you haven't already seen them already!

Dearbhla Walsh to Direct Dustin Hoffman In Roald Dahl's 'Esio Trot' 3831279 News

Irish director Dearbhla Walsh, who won an Emmy for Little Dorritt, is to direct a new BB adaptation of the Roald Dahl novel Esio Trot, starring Hollywood actor Dustin Hoffman and Judi Dench

Walsh, who will direct a script written by Richard Curtis, has worked on children's programming and soap opera Eastenders for 21 years. Her other credits include Funland, The Tudors, and Talk To Me.

The announcement was made by BBC One controller Charlotte Moore at the Edinburgh TV Festival on Thursday (August 22, 2013).

She said: "It's an honour to have Dame Judi Dench and Dustin Hoffman starring in this wonderful new adaptation.

"It's absolutely stellar casting for one of the nation's favourite children's classics."

Dahl's classic novel, published in 1990, tells the story of the shy old Mr Hoppy (Hoffman) who lives alone in an apartment building. For many years, he has been secretly in love with Ms Silver (Dench), a woman who lives below him.

Unfortunately for retired bachelor Mr Hoppy, the target of his affections lavishes her love on someone else: her pet tortoise.

Filming of the movie will begin next Spring.

It's been a rollercoaster couple of years for Hoffman, who received critical acclaim for his directorial debut Quartet, though was diagnosed with cancer. He was successfully treated for the disease in 2013.

Judi Dench's character M was killed off in the latest James Bond movie Skyfall, the most successful British film of all time.
