Comedy sequel The Smurfs 2 has left its competition feeling blue by topping the U.K. box office chart on its opening weekend (02-04Aug13).
The animated family film, which features the voices of Neil Patrick Harris and Hank Azaria, left its rivals in the shade by taking $4.8 million (£3.2 million) in ticket sales, easily outstripping The Heat, which took $3.8 million (£2.5 million).
Another new release, creepy horror movie The Conjuring, came in third with opening weekend takings of $3.2 million (£2.1 million), sending the previous weekend's (26-28Jul13) chart-topper The Wolverine tumbling into fourth, with $2.7 million (£1.8 million).
The top five is rounded out by Monsters University, which falls three places, with $2.5 million (£1.7 million).
A sleekly made thriller with a sparky sense of humour, this is also a rare action movie that has something important to say.
