The Royle Family Returns for BBC Christmas Special
The Royle Family Christmas special became a staple in many homes across the nation, but we've not been blessed with one since 2009. There was meant to be one for 2011, but apparently the creators of the show, Caroline Ahern and Craig Cash didn't get a script sorted in time. If that's true, then they've had extra time to deliver something special this year.
According to the Metro, Phil Mealey joined the writing team to create a the classically underwhelming festive day that the family are famed and loved for. This time around Dave (played by Cash) will be pitching an idea to Dragons' Den, while Jim has high hopes for a scratch card. In a subplot, there's a particularly busty new neighbour who's moving onto the street, which may be the perfect person for another neighbour, Joe, who's looking for a 'vacant lady'.
The cult comedy that burst onto screens in 1998, starring Ricky Tomlinson and Sue Johnston, wasn't immediately received with the warmth that it's garnered since, however it didn't take long for critics to come around to the unassuming and pleasantly human comedy. Although there were originally only three series which ended in 2000, its longevity has proved itself in its continued popularity 11 years on.
The BBC Christmas line up is looking great with emphasis on special episodes for Dr Who and Call the Midwife. Check out a teaser trailer of them all below.
