The Ronettes Star Bennett Dies
Former THE RONETTES star ESTELLE BENNETT has died. She was 67.
The singer was found dead at her home in New Jersey on Wednesday (11Feb09) after relatives were unable to contact her. The cause of death was not determined as WENN went to press.
Bennett shot to fame with the singing trio in the 1960s, formed with her sister Ronnie and cousin Nedra Talley. They were best known for their 1963 hit Be My Baby.
The group was also instrumental in epitomising producer Phil Spector's famous Wall of Sound recording technique.
The Ronettes signed with Spector's Philles Records in 1963 and went on to produce hits including Walkin' in the Rain and Baby I Love You before their eventual split in 1967.
Bennett's sister, Ronnie, married the music mogul in 1968 but divorced him six years later.
The group was later involved in a 15 year legal battle with Spector, claiming he had cheated them out of royalties. The case was thrown out on appeal in 2002.
In addition to her sister, Bennett is survived by a daughter, Toyin Hunter, and three grandsons.
