Members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences bowed and curtsied to The King's Speech today (Tuesday) as they bestowed 12 Oscar nominations on the movie, including best film, best director (Tom Hooper), best actor (Colin Firth), best supporting actress (Helena Bonham Carter), best supporting actor (Geoffrey Rush), screenplay (David Seidler) and editing (Tariq Anwar). It was the greatest number of Oscar nominations ever conferred on a British independent film. The Coen Brothers' True Grit was the runner-up with 10 nominations. Besides those two films, others nominated in the best film category included The Social Network, Inception, Black Swan, The Fighter, The Kids Are All Right,127 Hours, Toy Story 3, and Winter's Bone .
