'The Great Gatsby' Not So Great Says Unimpressed Critics

Leonardo DiCaprio’s been talking a good game when it comes to his latest collaboration with Baz Luhrmann, The Great Gatsby, but the critics aren’t impressed with the film adaptation of the F. Scott Fitzgerald novel whatsoever, with the movie receiving a wide range of disapproving comments – worrying news indeed given the hefty budget that’s been spent on it.

“Frenzied and overwrought, Baz Luhrmann'sThe Great Gatsby is a glitz-filled folly” slammed USA Today, with The AV Club offering a more roundabout way of their criticism, writing “A half-reverent, half-travestying adaptation that's campy but not a betrayal, offering a lively take on a familiar work while sacrificing such niceties as structure, character, and nuance.”

Luhrmann’s films have also looked incredibly slick and stylized, but they’ve always managed to pack a fair bit of punch in the script as well which has prevented any of the criticisms currently winging it’s way towards Gatsby. Indeed it seems that a lack of substance is what’s getting most critics goats, withThe Bloomberg News writing “Baz Luhrmann's "The Great Gatsby" is a gaudy, Ritz-sized rhinestone of a movie, more flashy than dazzling, beguiling from some angles and phony to its core” and the Chicago Sun Times commenting “Even when the movie's not working, its style fascinates. That "not working" part is a deal breaker, though ...” Will it affect the film? We’ll find out when it’s released on May 17th.
