The Great Gatsby Begins Production In Sydney
The Great Gatsby has begun production this week with its star studded cast arriving in Sydney, Australia.
LEONARADO DICAPRIO, Tobey Maguire and Isla Fisher star in Baz Luhrmann's 3D adaptation of the American classic novel. Written by F. Scott Fitzgerald in 1925 the story follows the life of New York playboy, Jay Gatsby who is haunted by his lost love during the 1920s. The movie which will begin filming on Monday (12.09.2011) will transform Sydney into a bustling New York City during the height of the Jazz Age and will cost $126 million to make with that money being spent on a collection of vintage cars including a 1929 Packard which will be used by DiCaprio. Speaking to hollywoodreporter.com director Luhrmann said "Fitzgerald's story defies time and geography. The vision and the goal of our remarkable cast and creatives is to do justice to the deftness of Fitzgerald's telling, and illuminate its big ideas and humanity. This is our challenge and our adventure."
Baz Luhrmann is a Sydney native and has been around the movies from an early age as his father owned and operated a cinema, his directorial debut came in 1992 when he made romantic comedy Strictly Ballroom. In 1996 he directed a contemporary adaptation of Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet starring Leonardo Dicaprio and has since made the blockbuster Australia starring Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman, a sweeping epic love story set in the Australian outback.
