The Fray Ruin The National Anthem: Was It The Worst Ever?
The best thing you could say about it was that it was quick, whilst the lead singer Isaac Slade managed to get the lyrics right which is more than others have done in the past (we're looking at you Aguilera.) However beyond that? There wasn't much to praise - go and check out the video if you don't believe us. The video shows the amusing site of the two basketball teams trying desperately to maintain a solemn composure in spite of the acoustic-guitar and tambourine-led rendition of their national anthem quite obviously being one of the most unintentionally funny things they've ever witnessed. Slade's voice doesn't help matters either, he may have sang about "how to save a life" on one of his group's biggest hits, but he sounded like he was demonstrating how to drown a cat here.
Some may point to Aerosmith man Steven Tyler's rendition of the anthem at the Super Bowl as an example of where the vocals weren't exactly note perfect, yet Tyler has the charismatic voice of someone whose been known around the world for over 30 years. Slade just sounded like he was trying too hard, and it sucked.
