The Expendables Show Their Age At Box Office

The old guys won again, but their victory was not as triumphant as it was on their first go-round. Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Chuck Norris, Bruce Willis, Jean-Claude Van Damme, and the other crew members of The Expendables 2 wound up with an estimated $28.7 million for the weekend, well below the $35-40 million that tracking surveys indicated they would likely earn, and a long way from the $34.8 million that the original film earned two years ago. Two newcomers divided up the family crowd. Focus Features' ParaNorman debuted on the low end of expectations with around $14 million and The Odd Life of Timothy Green came in below them with about $10.9 million. Also showing little sparkle was 20th Century Fox's Sparkle , which opened with $12 million. Last week's winner, The Bourne Legacy , slipped to second place with $17 million, to bring its ten-day total to $69.6 million. And Warner Bros.' Campaign added $13.3 million to its coffers to bring its total to $51.6 million. And, in its fifth week, Warner's The Dark Knight Rises crossed the $400-million mark with $11.1 million, to place sixth and bring its domestic total to $409.9 million. Despite the fact that many films performed more poorly than expected at the box office, business was up 12 percent from the same weekend a year ago, when the second week of The Help rose to No. 1 with $20 million.

The top ten films for the weekend, according to studio estimates compiled by Box Office Mojo 1. The Expendables 2, $28.8 million; 2. The Bourne Legacy , $17 million; 3. ParaNorman , $14 million; 4. The Campaign , $13.4 million; 5. Sparkle , $12 million; 6. The Dark Knight Rises , $11.1 million; 7. The Odd Life of Timothy Green , $10.9 million; 8. Hope Springs , $9.1 million; 9. Diary of a Wimpy Kid Dog Days , $3.9 million; 10. Total Recall , $3.5 million.
