'The Expendables 2' Wows Fans And Bores Critics

Simon West's blockbuster sequel The Expendables 2 is proving popular amongst its hard core set of fans, who have relished the chance to see all their old action heroes back together again. But with the film's average haul amongst the cinema press, has it actually been a success?

"Taut, violent, and suitably self-deprecating, The Expendables 2 gives classic action fans everything they can reasonably expect from a star-studded shoot-'em-up - for better and for worse" says Rotten Tomatoes, the popular review site. The film has received an average rating of 66 per cent from various critics, but audience ratings on the same site stack up to a whopping 90 per cent, proving that audiences and critics simply can't agree. The Expendables - released in 2010 - grossed an impressive $274m, and considering the profits for the latest sequel are yet to be released, it's hard to judge the film on a commercial basis. It does have stiff competition, though, with the hugely popular The Dark Knight Rises still in cinemas. The latest Bourne film The Bourne Legacy has also provided Sylvester Stallone et al with stiff competition.

Given the film's nature: a nostalgic throwback to action heroes gone by (although Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jet Li might contest the claim of 'gone by') it's no surprise the critics haven't taken to West's latest high-action thrill ride, but fans of 80's and 90's action films won't miss the chance to see these guys in action once more, regardless of their advancing years.
