The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel: Retirees Look To Thwart Superheroes
The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel opens in the USA tomorrow (May 4, 2012.) Although it faces stiff competition from the Marvel Comics adaptation The Avengers, the people promoting this movie, featuring an all-star British ensemble cast, are no doubt promoting this to a very different audience indeed. The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel tells the story of a group of British retirees travelling to India to reside in what they believe is a newly renovated hotel. The cast features Judi Dench, Bill Nighy and Maggie Smith.
The movie already opened in the UK some time ago and received largely positive reviews, from the public and critics alike. The Rotten Tomatoes reviews site has scored the film at a respectable 79 per cent and Roger Ebert, writing for Chicago Sun Times, described it as "A charming, funny and heartwarming movie ... a smoothly crafted entertainment that makes good use of seven superb veterans." Dame Judi Dench's performance is given particular attention and is described by The New Yorker as "one of her most wide-ranging and moving performances."
Writing for The Guardian, Peter Bradshaw was less kind to the movie, saying "It's a film which looks as if it has been conceived to be shown on a continuous loop in a Post Office queue". Similarly, the review from the Associated Press commented on it being old-fashioned but overall, the response was a positive one. It's unlikely to top the box office charts this weekend, with such strong competition but looks set to be an enjoyable experience for those that don't fancy the thrills and spills of Avengers.
