The Beatles Refused To Play To Segregated Audiences

The Beatles showed their support for the civil rights movement by refusing to play to segregated audiences on their 1965 U.S. tour.

A concert rider documenting the Fab Four's backstage requests was made public this week and is due to go up for auction in Los Angeles next week (20Sep11).

Now it's emerged that in addition to demanding an ice cooler, a portable TV, and 150 uniformed police as protection, the band also stated they would not play a show if the audience was segregated according to race.

The rider, for a concert at the Cow Palace in Daly City, California, is expected to sell for up to $5,000 (£3,120).
