The Avengers Sets New Record

Chalk up yet another record for The Avengers fastest film ever to reach $1 billion worldwide. It did so on Sunday, barely, as the Marvel/Disney movie earned $103,2 billion in North America and $95.4 million abroad, putting its worldwide total at $1.002 billion. By contrast, the Johnny Depp vampire drama Dark Shadows looked toothless, pulling in $28.8 million. While The Avengers dominated among younger moviegoers, Dark Shadows drew 73 percent of its audience from people over the age of 25. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Dan Fellman indicated that the film would ordinarily have performed more strongly but that it found itself in the "unusual position of being behind the vacuum cleaner that is The Avengers ." Will the film be able to recoup its $125-million production cost and $35-million marketing expenditure? Said Fellman, "It's now all about taking a deep breath and seeing how we hang in there for the second weekend.

The top ten films over the weekend, according to final figures compiled by Box Office Mojo (figures in parentheses represent total gross to date) 1. The Avengers, Disney/Marvel, $103,052,274, 2 Wks. Who Is 'Doctor Strange' Director Scott Derrickson? 4229355 News

As the Marvel juggernaut continues to speed ahead, dispensing a huge array of films and series featuring multifarious characters and an increasing selection of superhuman protagonists, it is no surprise that the comic book giant has announced that Doctor Strange will make his cinema debut in a recently announced eponymous film. The Doctor’s role in the comic books is that of the Sorcerer Supreme- Earth’s protector against threats that are magical and fantastical rather than the orchestrated destruction of standard comic book villains. He has already been the subject of a low budget direct-to-TV film as well as a TV series, but with Marvel Studios financing the project we can be sure that Doctor Strange will be a superhero movie of epic proportions- a visual spectacle certain to be a feast of CGI. However, other facts hint that the film will take on a darker turn than the likes of The Avengers or Iron Man.

Derrickson At Sinister ScreeningDerrickson has made a name for himself as a horror director able to work on small budgets.

But who will take the helm as director of such an imposing project? That accolade has been bestowed upon Scott Derrickson, who will reportedly work alongside producer Kevin Feige- the man responsible for the production of many of Marvel’s blockbuster leviathans, including each of the X-Men, Iron Man and Avengers instalments. Derrickson has been slowly making a name for himself throughout Hollywood as a much respected horror director and his film The Exorcism Of Emily Rose grossed $144 million at the box-office, a hugely respectable figure for a low-budget horror pic.

He suffered a misstep in the guise of the Keanu Reeves vehicle The Day The Earth Stood Still, an ill-conceived remake of the 1950’s sci-fi classic. But Derrickson got back on the right track with Sinister, starring Ethan Hawke, which performed very well amongst audiences and critics alike despite its modest budget. However, it is yet to be seen how well Derrickson will perform with a budget as surely extensive as that which will provided for Doctor Strange.

More: Will Marvel's Doctor Strange Posit A Darker Turn For The Superhero Film?

Yet, with guidance from producer Kevin Feige, Doctor Strange will surely be a success, although due to the lack of awareness of the character amongst the mainstream cinema-going public, it is doubtful whether the film will gain a level of appeal which helped Iron Man and The Avengers to billion-dollar grossing success stories. But given Derrickson’s penchant for the occult, the mysterious and the eerie, Doctor Strange could usher in a fresh take on the superhero film, one that relies more on psychological means to engage audiences rather than a continuous barrage of special effects.

As such, there will be plenty of intrigue surrounding the picture as a possible site of revamp for the superhero zeitgeist, a platform for innovation that only a young director of Derrickson’s calibre can provide.

Elizabeth Olsen Snaffles Avengers 2 Role, After Saoirse Ronan Passes 3889992 News

Elizabeth Olsen will play Scarlet Witch in Joss Whedon's forthcoming superhero sequel Avengers 2: Age of Ultron, according to Nick Fury himself, Samuel L Jackson. Irish actress Saoirse Ronan was originally offered the part, but turned it down, leaving executives eyeing indie-favorite Olsen.

Jackson spilt the beans while discussing his cameo on Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D with the Wall Street Journal.

"I know we're shooting in London, that James Spader is Ultron and going to be the bad guy, and that we added Ms. [Elizabeth] Olsen [who will play the Scarlet Witch], but I don't know what she's doing, if she's on the inside or the outside. I haven't seen a script."

It's huge news for Olsen, the younger sister of fashionista child stars Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. She broke though in the horror remake Silent House and impressed in cult drama Martha Marcy May and Marlene and the indie-drama Liberal Arts. She's already filmed a couple of biggies, including Spike Lee's Oldboy remake and Gareth Edwards' Godzilla movie. Obviously Age of Ultron will be her biggest movie yet, and probably has a fair chance of becoming the biggest movie in cinema history.

Now, the Scarlet Witch has a twin brother in Quicksilver, the mutant who can move and think at superhuman speeds. So far, there's nothing official though Kick-Ass's Aaron-Taylor Johnson has entered negotiations for the role, according to Cinema Blend.

The hotly anticipated sequel won't hit cinemas until May 1, 2015, though according to Jackson, production could begin as early as March 2014. There's still no word on the elusive script or how Joss Whedon plans to shape the next instalment in the likely franchise.

Whedon warned that he wouldn't necessarily make the movie 'bigger' in terms of budget and would instead concentrate on developing character. "Don't go bigger; go deeper. All of these people have met, so you have that out of the way. Now you can spend your time just digging in - and by digging in, I mean with a scalpel, to cause pain," he said.

Whedon, speaking to the entertainment website, said "I knew right away what I wanted to do with him, he's always trying to destroy the Avengers, goddamn it, he's got a bee in his bonnet. He's not a happy guy, which means he's an interesting guy. He's got pain. And the way that manifests is not going to be standard robot stuff. So we'll take away some of those powers because at some point everybody becomes magic, and I already have someone [Scarlet Witch, a new character] who's a witch."

Elizabeth Olsen is rumoured to be in talks with Avengers' producers for the role of Scarlet Witch, according to the Film School Rejects. Scarlet Witch is an Avenger who has the power to alter probabilities and casting hexes.

Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D Promises To Be More Than Avengers Spin Off 3799001 News

The critics got a first glance at what Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D looks like yesterday, (Sunday Aug 4) when they were treated to a special screening of the first episode. And those same critics got to grill producer Joss Whedon afterwards.

The show - created for ABC by Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen – is set in the same universe as creations like Iron Man; it contains the super-human criminals that S.H.I.E.L.D will have to battle each week and takes place after The Avengers’ Battle of New York.

"Every week it's not going to be some new hero," Whedon explains. "There could be a device, there could be a mystery.” The show will focus on characters who aren’t blessed (or cursed) with superpowers, rather it will look at the intricacies of teamwork and how the group work together to bring down the threat.

"There are so many aspects to what's happened since everybody in the world found out there's a superhero team and that there were aliens that invaded New York," Whedon told critics. (KMBZ)

"We want to be able to change it up every week. We want to be able to deal with every aspect, the spy stuff, the hero stuff, the heartfelt stuff...every week you get something that feels a little bit different, so it's not just, you know, turkey every day."

It looks as though superhero TV shows are regaining their vogue; after Arrow was such a hit, a Green Lantern series has been announced to combine on CW, and with S.H.I.E.L.D premiering on Sept. 24, we could be seeing a lot more of our favourite comic book creations hitting the small, as well as the big, screen.

San Diego Comic-Con 2013 Highlights: Marvel Dominated With X-Men And Avengers 3776438 News

Marvel dominated the San Diego Comic-Con with their X-Men and Avenger's panels. DC's Superman announced the 2015 sequel to Man of Steel, starring Henry Cavill, would feature Batman.

The X-Men panel certainly had the most impressive cast turnout. Actors from across the X-Men films appeared to promote X-Men: Days of Future Past, which is due to be released in 2014. Ian McKellan flirted with the younger reincarnation of his character Magneto, Michael Fassbender, commenting on Proposition 8, he said "It's great to be back in California, I feel safe here now." He continued by announcing "I'm looking for a husband", cheekily adding "it's great to meet you Michael".

The next instalment of the Avenger's franchise, Avengers: Age of Ultron, is scheduled for release in Summer 2015. Tom Hiddleston appeared at the panel in character, as Thor's brother Loki. The latest Thor instalment Thor: Dark World is due to be released later this year, so Hiddleston's appearance suited promoting The Avengers and Thor films. Other Avengers news included the promise of Captain America: Winter Soldier would be more "character driven".

DC's contribution to the comic-con was their revelation that Superman and Batman would be teaming up in Superman: Man of Steel sequel. Henry Cavill will be reprising his role as the superhero, although no casting decisions for the Batman role were announced.

The Hunger Games panel was greeted with hugely popular, attracting an audience of 6500 fans. Jennifer Lawrence impressed the crowd with anecdotes from the filming of Catching Fire and the premiere of the film's full trailer.

From the realm of television, True Blood's panel announced they would be changing direction for the seventh season. Executive Producer, Brian Buckner promised fans the plotlines would be reined in, with action centring back in Bon Temps.

The Comic-Con's turnout usually indicates how successful a film or series will be. With such vast crowds showing up to see many of the aforementioned movie panels, next year's releases are due to be highly successful.

Mark Ruffalo Stunned By Sean Penn Meeting 3686974 News

The Avengers star Mark Ruffalo abandoned his family at a movie premiere after his acting idol Sean Penn suggested they leave the theatre and go for drinks.

The movie star was trying to avoid people at the screening and was making his way back to his family after hiding out in the bathroom when he was accosted by the Oscar winner.

He recalls, "I was sneaking out and coming charging across a huge lobby was Sean Penn by himself and I hadn't met him yet, and I saw him and went, 'Oh no, he would have been so much better for this part.'

"I was looking for somewhere to hide, but there was nowhere to hide and he spotted me and came directly towards me, I thought to tell me that he would have been better for the part, and he came up to me and he said, 'Hey man, loved you in the movie. Let's go and get a drink.'

"(I was like), 'Ok, cool, let's get a drink,' so we walked into a bar and I left my family, everyone at the movie... It was Sean Penn... I'm thinking, 'Oh my God, I'm having a drink with Sean Penn.'"

But Ruffalo's nerves quickly got the best of him when he realised he'd have to order something manly to impress his new drinking buddy: "The bartender comes up and Sean says, 'What are you having?' and I said, 'Well... I guess I'll take a Maker's Mark double, neat,' and I said, 'What are you gonna have?' and he says, 'I'll have a white Russian (cocktail)', and so I changed my drink order to a white Russian, which is what I wanted."

Joss Whedon Hints At Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch For 'The Avengers 2' 3629668 News

Joss Whedon has hinted that the brother-sister comic book duo of Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch could feature in The Avengers 2. "I've got these two characters, two of my favourite characters from the comic book, a brother-sister act," he told Yahoo at the Iron Man 3 premiere, "They're in the movie."

Though he didn't directly reference Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch - and other siblings in the Marvel Universe include Aurora and Nothstar - the brother and sister are considered the most likely characters. Andrea and Andreas von Strucker, the villains collectively known as Fenris, are also twin brother and sister. There had been some speculation as to whether Marvel owned the rights to Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver (given that they're essentially X-Men chatacters) though during an interview with Hey U Guys, studio boss Kevin Feige said, "It's a little complicated. If they want to use them in an X-Men movie they could, if we want to use them in an Avengers movie we could. So that's that then.

Despite originating in the X-Men stories, the characters have actually played a central role in many of the biggest Avengers storylines. The question now is of course, who will play the brother sister team? Ryan Gosling? Mila Kunis? Is there anyone left who hasn't yet played a comic-book hero in either X-Men or The Avengers?

The Avengers 2 will hit theaters on May 1, 2015. Expect it to take somewhere between $100 billion and infinite at the box-office.

The Avengers Set to Save Us From A Boring Academy Awards Ceremony 3484107 News

The cast of The Avengers will swoop in and hand out some awards at The Oscars later this month, saving us from a boring ceremony, and the careers of some nominees, too.

"We are happy to re-unite the Avengers cast to present on our show... Audiences who enjoyed the year's biggest box office hit will be excited to see these terrific actors back together again," producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron said in a statement.

Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Samuel L. Jackson, Jeremy Renner, and Mark Ruffalo will present together at this year's Oscars ceremony Feb. 24, but perhaps notably, Scarlett Johansson will be absent from proceedings. The Avenger has never been nominated for an Oscar, something that is becoming all the more prevalent every year she receives a snub.

Downey has twice been nominated for an Oscar, for his leading role in Chaplin as well as for his supporting role in Tropic Thunder. Jackson too has two; he was nominated in 1994 for his supporting role in Pulp Fiction and in this year's Best Picture nominee for Django Unchained. Renner was nominated for his leading role in the 2009 Best Picture winner The Hurt Locker and for his supporting role in The Town. He also had roles in this year's The Bourne Legacy and Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol. Ruffalo received his first nomination for his supporting role in the 2010 Best Picture nominee, The Kids Are All Right.

Disney is Sued for Billions, But It's Not Them That Needs a Hero 3319655 News

Stan Lee Media Inc (SLMI) is definitely wishing that Lee had come up with some kind of jurisdictory-super-hero in their many times of need over many years of many law suits... alas, no such entity exists, either between the pages of a graphic novel, comic or indeed in real life. Stan Lee Media, a company that was shut down years ago and is no longer affiliated with Stan Lee, is suing Disney (again) for billions of dollars over a disagreement in regard to the rights to the Marvel characters created by Lee decades ago.

According to the LA Times, the complaints state “The true facts are that Stan Lee Media Inc. owns the copyrights to Stan Lee's creations... Accordingly, Stan Lee Media Inc. is entitled to the billions of dollars of profits that have been kept by Defendant Disney." The complaint goes on, saying “[I]n November, 1998, Stan Lee signed a written agreement with Marvel Enterprises, Inc. in which he purportedly assigned to Marvel the rights to the Characters. However, Lee no longer owned those rights since they had been assigned to SLEI previously. Accordingly, the Marvel agreement actually assigned nothing.”

Business inside reports that “The company is seeking damages of $5.5 billion for copyright infringement citing Disney's use characters "Iron Man 2," "Thor," "X-Men: First Class," "The Avengers," and "The Amazing Spider-Man" in films amounting to box office receipts of $3.5 billion.” All of this seems fairly legitimate from the outset, however, legally they have no leg to stand on, all due to a small loophole in the law called 'res judicata' which is basically the same as no man 'can be tried for the same crime twice' or indeed more than twice as SLMI have sued Disney and Lee himself numerous times. Given that the Avengers are purportedly owned by Disney, there'll be no-one to avenge the case for SLMI for now.
