The Artist Leads Golden Globes Nominations

Who would ever have thought that a silent movie, in black and white, with no major stars and an unknown director would wind up with the most Golden Globes nominations this year? Well, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which has a long history of surprising nominations, announced early today (Thursday) that The Artist had indeed pulled off that feat, receiving six nominations, including best comedy or musical, best actor (Jean Dujardin) and best supporting actress (Berenice Bejo), best director (Michel Hazanavicius) and screenplay (Hazanavicius). Dujardin issued a statement saying that the nomination "left me speechless." Tied for second place with five nominations apiece were The Help and The Descendants -- each nominated in the best dramatic film category and each receiving nods for its stars Viola Davis, nominated for best actress, and Octavia Spencer and Jessica Chastain, for supporting actress, in The Help ; George Clooney for best actor in The Descendants. Another Clooney starrer, The Ides of March , was also nominated for best dramatic film (in addition, Clooney received nominations for best director and screenplay for that one), as were Hugo, Moneyball, and War Horse . Besides The Artist , other films in the musical or comedy category were 50/50, Bridesmaids, My Week with Marilyn, and Midnight in Paris. Ryan Gosling was nominated for best actor in both the dramatic and comedy/musical categories for his performances in Ides of March and Crazy, Stupid, Love., respectively. Glenn Close was also a dual nominee, for her starring role in Albert Nobbs , and for writing the lyrics for the movie's theme. Winners are due to be announced on Jan. 15.
