The Artist Kicks Off A Winning Weekend At The Cesars

'The Artist' has kicked off what is seemingly a victorious weekend, winning six Cesar awards. 'The Artist', whilst being tipped to conquer the Oscars tomorrow night (26 Feb 2012), won best film at the 37th Cesars ceremony in France last night.

The French film has already snapped up a Golden Globe and seven Bafta awards, but it was at this home ceremony where the movie was truly celebrated. The film won best director for Michel Hazanavicius and best actress for Berenice Bejo. Receiving his prize, Hazanavicius said: 'This is a film that started out at the very bottom, it's a film nobody wanted to make, and now we are right at the top. It's a beautiful story'. Bejo, who plays silent Peppy Miller was quite teary accepting her award. Jean Dujardin, who had also won Best Actor at Cannes, Bafta, the Golden Globes and an Oscar nomination, was not victorious however, with the award going to Omar Sy for the 'Intouchables'. However Dujardin is tipped to bag the best actor Oscar tomorrow with the film itself nominated ten times. If he wins, he would be the first French-born actor to win an Oscar for a lead role.

The winners of the Ceser awards all received Oscar-like trophies which were sculpted by CESAR BALDACCINI, the artist they are named after. Other winners included critically acclaimed Iranian family drama 'A Separation', which was awarded the Cesar for best foreign film.
