'The Amazing Spider-man' Beats 'The Avengers' In Asia

'The Amazing Spider-Man' is on-course to become one of the highest grossing movies of the year, after storming the Asian markets ahead of its hugely anticipated U.S. release this weekend. Marc Webb's reboot of the superhero movie took $50.2 million on debut in Asia, surpassing the figures of 'The Avengers' earlier this year, which went on to dominate the box-office worldwide.

According to Deadline.com, 'Spider-Man' posted huge revenues in Japan, the Philippines, Hong Kong, Thailand and Singapore. The movie which stars Andrew Garfield in the title role, as well as Emma Stone and Rhys Ifans, opens in the UK and US on July 3, 2012. Hollywood's "tracking system" estimates how movies will fare based on polls on which films cinemagoers are most looking forward to watching. According to the Hollywood Reporter's results, 'The Amazing Spider-Man' could open to $125 million, second only the 'Avengers' for 2012 ($217 million). Joss Whedon's superhero epic has taken over $1.44 billion worldwide and stands as the third highest grossing movie of all time, behind Titanic and Avatar. Previous 'Spider-Man' movies have grossed $812.million (Spider-Man) and $783.8million (Spider-Man 2) and $890.9 million (Spider-Man 3) respectively.

Though Seth Macfarlane's 'Ted' topped the box-office this weekend, the comedy will almost certainly make way for 'Spider-Man' this week. Also set for release is Benicio Del Toro's 'Savages', and the Katy Perry concert movie 'Part of Me'.
