Terrence Howard - Terrence Howard Honours Late Mum In Colon Cancer Ad
Actor Terrence Howard has opened up about his late mother's death in a new public service announcement for the Colon Cancer Alliance.
The Hustle & Flow star fights back tears as he states his mum could have been saved if she had undergone early cancer screening in the emotional ad.
He says, "I miss my mother's voice and her gentle kindness... I remember my mum singing to me. I remember singing with her... but, despite my loss, my mum would love to know that her battle with colon cancer helped save others."
Howard reveals his mum Anita was already at Stage 3 in her cancer battle at the time of her diagnosis. She died in 2008.
He adds, "She should have been in a high-risk bracket and should have been tested at maybe 35, or maybe 40. If she had been, she would have been fine, but she didn't win that battle."
In 2010, Howard wrote an essay for the Huffington Post about his mother's cancer battle, revealing she kept the diagnosis to herself so as not to worry her family and friends.
The actor wrote: "We found out at a point in which there was nothing we could do for her. It was terminal and we were left helpless, hopeless and completely devastated at what was ahead - our future without her as she was being robbed from us by this thief of a disease."
He added, "Seeing my mother die, experiencing the stages of cancer that drained her of life, made me come face to face with my own mortality. And so I knew I needed to continue experiencing life for everything that it was and finding its beauty in my own children. My mother believed every day should be seized and life was provided to us to be lived to its fullest."
