Tattooed Christina Ricci Stars In 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'
The Hollywood actress Christina Ricci stars in the Classic Stage Company's production of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. The performance features modern dress, while Ricci sports tattoos and plays the role of Hermia in her underwear.
Reviewing the two hour and forty-minute show, Bloomberg joked that it had "more plot twists than the first season of Nbc's Smash". The New York Daily News praised the new risque reworking of Shakespeare's classic play, saying, "Four bewitched Athenians played by Christina Ricci, Halley Wegryn Gross, Jordan Dean and Nick Gehlfuss expose their hearts and ridiculously toned physiques. During their fairyland encounter, mini-skirts and skinny jeans come off and all they're left in are their undies". The New York Times were less complimentary, particularly of Ricci's performance, saying, "Ms. Ricci, a movie actor who made a fine Broadway debut in Donald Margulies's "Time Stands Still," is plainly out of her depth in the thickets of Shakespeare's language. She tends to slather emotion over the words as if pouring syrup over a stack of pancakes, so the rhythms and sometimes the sense are lost".
The actress, perhaps still best known for playing Wednesday Addams in 'The Addams Family', recently signed on for the forthcoming Smurfs sequel. She will play Vexy, an evil version of Katy Perry's Smurfette.
