Tarantino's Controversial 'Django Unchained' Trailer Released

After tackling the tricky subject of Nazis in Inglorious Basterds, Quentin Tarantino is back, with Django Unchained. A trailer has just been released for the movie, which deals with the topics of slavery in the US. As is usual with Tarantino, there's a dark humour running through this controversial movie, which stars Leonardo Dicaprio, as well as Jamie Foxx (as the title character), Christoph Waltz and Kerry Washington.

The trailer begins with sombre footage of a marching chain-gang of slaves but the mood of the piece switches with the arrival of Dr. King Schultz (played by Waltz), who frees Django from the chain, to the tune of James Brown's 'the Big Payback.' "How do you like the bounty-hunting business?' Schultz asks Django.

'Kill white folks and they pay you for it? What's not to like?' replies the freed man. The trailer also contains a smattering of images such as visible whip scars on Django's body and a group of Klu Klux Klan members carrying torches.

Tarantino's up to his usual tricks with the casting too, placing DiCaprio in his first major villainous role. Calvin Candie is the bad guy who forces slaves to fight to the death, for his own amusement and Leonardo seems to relish the opportunity to break free from the clean cut Hollywood roles he normally tackles. Clearly, some of Hollywood's stars were sensitive to the controversy that Django Unchained will inevitably attract. The role of Django was created with Will Smith in mind, according to the Daily Mail, though he opted to go for the more family-friendly opportunities that lie in Men In Black 3.
