Tarantino To Serve Up Spaghetti Westerns

by | 26 July 2007

Cult film director Quentin Tarantino will present a number of Spaghetti Westerns in a special area at the Venice film festival.

Over 30 of the low-budget movies will be shown, which Tarantino said would recognise some filmmakers who were not appreciated enough.

The Kill Bill director was quoted by the Reuters news agency as saying: "A lot of directors who never got their due will now get their due."

Well-known Spaghetti Westerns include The Ugly Ones, A Fistful of Dollars and The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.

Tarantino's Western selection will be shown in a sidebar of the festival, which has more of a Hollywood glamour feel than previous occasions.

Keira Knightley's latest film, Atonement, will open the festival on August 29th. The movie is based on the Ian McEwan novel and also stars The Last King of Scotland actor James McAvoy.

A Bob Dylan biopic starring Richard Gere will also be shown, entitled I'm Not There, as well as the latest Charlize Theron movie.

Films from Kenneth Branagh and Ken Loach are also scheduled to be shown, while comedy flick The Darjeeling Limited, starring Owen Wilson, will be screened at the event.

Legendary director Tim Burton is expected to be honoured at the festival for his lifetime in film.

The Venice film festival runs for 11 days, concluding on September 8th, and is directed by Marco Muller. It will be the 64th festival where films can compete for the Gold Lion award.
