Supercalifragilisticexpialidocous: Robert B Sherman Dies, Aged 86
Robert B Sherman, the Oscar-winning Disney songwriter who composed tracks such as Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious for 'Mary Poppins', has died in London at the age of 86. With his brother Richard, he wrote songs for films such as Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, the Jungle Book and of course, Mary Poppins.
His death on Monday (March 5, 2012) was announced by his son Jeffrey Sherman, who told fans on Facebook, "I have very sad news to convey.My Dad, Robert B Sherman, passed away ... in London. He went peacefully after months of truly valiantly fending off death. He loved life and his dear heart finally slowed to a stop when he could fight no more". The Sherman brothers scooped two Academy Awards during their long and distinguished career, though they were nominated for several more, including for the title song from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Their contribution to music and film was recognized when they were honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1976. Sherman's most famous compositions include A Spoonful of Sugar from Mary Poppins, Trust In Me and I Wanna Be Like You, from the Jungle Book, and Truly Scrumptious and Me Ol' Bamboo from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Writing on Monday, son Jeffrey said, "I will write more about this incredible man I love and admire so much when I am better rested and composed. He deserves that. In the meantime, please say a prayer for him. As he said, he wanted to bring happiness to the world and, unquestionably, he succeeded".
In total, Robert and his brother enjoyed a 10-year-old association with Walt Disney, during which time they composed more than 150 songs from film and television.
