Super Bowl Delay Sheds A Little Darkness On The Ratings
Thanks to that 34-minute delay due to an electrical outage at the New Orleans Superdome -- cause: still unknown -- CBS can now claim the record for the most viewers during primetime (7:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. on Sundays) in history. The reason is that during previous Super Bowl nights, the post-game special episode always brought down the average ratings for the night, no matter how big the audience. For Example, last year, when The Game was carried by NBC, a special episode of The Voice drew 37.6 million viewers. During the prior year, when the game was carried by Fox, a special episode of Glee attracted just 27 million viewers. This year, Nielsen broke out the half hour period during the outage -- during which time the announcers vamped about whether it would hurt the Baltimore Ravens' momentum as a separate program unto itself, titled (by Nielsen) Super Bowl XLVII Delay. As it turned out, 106.6 million people kept Delay on their TV screens, putting it in the record books as the fourth most-watched program in history.

Person of Interest, CBS, 9.6/15; 7. American Idol (Wednesday), Fox, 9.2/14; 8. Two and a Half Men, CBS, 8.4/13; 9. American Idol (Thursday), Fox, 7.9/12; 10. Blue Bloods, CBS, 7.4/13.
