Strong Debuts For Art-house Fare
Two art-house films made impressive debuts over the weekend. Sarah's Key , starring Kristin Scott Thomas and released by The Weinstein Co., earned $117,045 at four theaters in New York and Los Angeles for a per-theater average of $23,409. (By contrast, Captain America averaged $17,719 per theater.) And Fox Searchlight's Another Earth also debuted in four theaters with $78,413 in ticket sales or an average of $19,600 per theater. Meanwhile, Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris remained in the top ten, barely budging from its week-to-week gross of just under $2 million. Now showing in just 621 theaters after 10 weeks, the film actually ticked upwards by a small percentage over the weekend even while losing 85 venues. The movie has grossed $44.9 million domestically.
