Storm Plays Havoc With Tv

As dozens of network-owned and -affiliated stations opted out of their regular programming and switched to local coverage of Hurricane -- now Tropical Storm -- Sandy, some networks decided to drop original episodes Monday night and go with reruns instead. (Millions of viewers whose power was cut off by the storm were left without television reception unless they had smartphones or tablets with broadband access to the Internet.) David Letterman and Jimmy Fallon taped their shows without an audience. Each of the network nightly newscasts expanded to one hour. (Stations had the option of carrying the second half-hour. ABC's Nightline also was stretched to an hour. Surprisingly, except for one egregious incident, all of the broadcast and cable news coverage went off with nary a hitch. That one incident involved an erroneous report by CNN's Piers Morgan and the Weather Channel claiming that the New York Stock Exchange was under three feet of water. David Zurawik, the TV critic for the Baltimore Sun, called Morgan's report journalistic malfeasance, adding, CNN is too good to be the source of such misinformation being fed to an already rattled American public. Meanwhile, all television and movie location shooting in New York City was canceled by authorities. Among the productions affected was Darren Aronofsky's Noah. Tweeted actress Emma Watson, I take it that the irony of a massive storm holding up the production of 'Noah' is not lost.
