Storm Shuts Down Netflix On East Coast
Netflix subscribers may be considering the U.S. Postal Service's motto that "neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night" will prevent their mail from being delivered, but a bad storm can disrupt their streaming service. An untold number of Netflix subscribers who dropped their DVD-by-mail service in favor of the streaming-only one discovered that they could not access the service on Friday and Saturday when the mid-Atlantic storm caused Amazon's Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) to go down, taking Netflix, Instagram and Pinterest down with it on the nights that generally bring the most Traffic to those sites. Netflix was forced to go to Facebook to post a message saying that it was aware of the problem and was working to resolve it. Forbes magazine, which originally reported the problem, observed that "one of the selling points of the Cloud is that there are redundancies to prevent just such occurrences. A small step backwards, perhaps, for cloud computing."
