Stone Roses Play For Britain's Olympic Heroes

The Stone Roses played an intimate show in London on Monday night (06Aug12) for a crowd of Britain's Olympic heroes including gold medallists Jessica Ennis and Bradley Wiggins.

The Fools Gold hitmakers reformed in May (12) after 16 years apart for a series of big shows this summer (12), including massive concerts in their hometown of Manchester, England for around 240,000 fans.

However, the rockers scaled down their set to play a tiny show at a pop-up venue in east London for a crowd of fans, celebrities and Olympians, including Ennis, who won a gold medal in the London 2012 heptathlon, and cyclist Wiggins, who became the most decorated British Olympian in history after taking first place in the time trial event.

Ennis told reporters she was delighted to be invited to the show, exclaiming, "I had to come tonight, I think they (the Stone Roses) are brilliant. I’ve been pretty overwhelmed by the support all of us have been receiving. I love the Stone Roses and can’t believe I’m getting to see them in such a small place.”

During the gig, Stone Roses frontman Ian Brown took time out to pay tribute to the athletes, telling the crowd, "We’ve got the new queen of England here - Jessica Ennis. And the new king - Bradley Wiggins.”

Other famous faces in the audience included The Clash guitarist Mick Jones, Paul Weller, Jimmy Page, Bobby Gillespie and Harry Potter actor Rupert Grint, while musician Goldie admitted he was most pleased to see the Olympians enjoying the show.

He says, "That was special. You’re not going to get the chance to see a band like that in a place like this again. It’s amazing – there are so many great British musicians in here but everyone’s just focused on Bradley and Jessica. They deserve it.”
