Stomp The Yard Rules Us Box Office
Ben Stiller's Night At The Museum has been knocked off the number one spot in the US box office by urban dance film Stomp The Yard.
Featuring Ricky Gervais, Robin Williams and Steve Coogan, Night At The Museum proved the most popular film for cinemagoers for three weeks in a row.
But Stomp The Yard managed to take home $22 million (£11.2 million) in its first weekend, leaping its way to number one as Stiller's flick took $17.1 million (£8.1 million), according to studio estimates.
In third place is Will Smith's The Pursuit of Happyness, for which he is nominated as best actor at this evening's Golden Globes.
Paul Dergarabedian, president of box office tracker Media By Numbers, told the Associated Press news agency that Sony the film's producers had picked a "great weekend" to release Stomp The Yard.
"The urban audience wields a lot of clout at the box office. If you put a film in the marketplace that has that built-in appeal to that audience, look at the numbers. The numbers speak for themselves," he added.
Stomp The Yard features Columbus Short as a troubled 19-year-old who enters a street style dance competition at his university.
