Stevie Wonder Wows New York With Show Of Tributes + Stars

STEVIE WONDER stunned fans in New York on Saturday night (17Nov07) with a series of touching tributes and big star guests. The soul star kicked off his show at Madison Square Garden with a silent tribute to those who died in the horrors of 9/11. He told fans, "I promised that when I came back to the Garden I'd take a moment of silence for the people we lost on 9/11." Fan Amanda Lornie says, "It was one of those special moments. You could hear a pin drop for about 10 seconds." Wonder went on to pay tribute to his mother, who died last year (06), and then offered his support to Kanye West, who is currently mourning the loss of his mother. The singer said, "I'm there for Kanye if he needs me," and then offered West words of hope, revealing his mother came to visit him in an effort to end his grieving. Wonder added, "After my mother's homegoing to heaven she came to me and said, 'Get out there boy, and do what you do.'" Then, during a spirited version of For Once In My Life, Wonder told fans his mother's favourite singers were Ella Fitzgerald and Tony Bennett, at which point Bennett joined Wonder onstage to complete the song as a duet. But the best was yet to come; during a rendition of Superstition, Wonder called Prince out of the audience and asked him to play lead guitar on the song. The Purple Rain hitmaker seemed stunned, but agreed.
