Stephen Colbert - Stephen Colbert Returns, Salutes 'Hard As Nails' Mother

Stephen Colbert returned to the hot-seat of 'The Colbert Report' on Monday (February 20, 2012), after cancelling two tapings following his 91-year-old mother suffering an illness. The presenter and political satirist sent a heartfelt message to his mother Lorna, and denied Joan Rivers' claim that he had taken time off to get a nose-job, reports The Wrap.
Colbert's subtle message essentially confirmed the reason for his absence was down to the welfare of his mother - he told viewers, "Oh, and one more thing.Evidently, having 11 children makes you tough as nails. Confidential to a lovely lady". His audience responded with warm applause. Colbert's mother and father had 11 children, before he and two of Stephen's brothers were killed in a plane accident in 1974. In the wake of the tragedy, Colbert is understood to have become extremely close to his mother, and such was his eagerness to cancel last week's show to be by her side. The "tough as nails" line hinted that Lorna was now recovering well, though neither Colbert nor his representatives have commented on her wellbeing. Earlier in the show, he had shot down claims made by comedienne Rivers that he was having some cosmetic surgery on his nose, joking that he had actually had work on his buttocks.
After receiving a wave of supportive messages on Twitter, Colbert told followers on Saturday (February 25, 2012), "My family and I would like to thank everyone who has offered their thoughts and prayers. We are grateful and touched by your concern".
