Star Wars - Stars Star Wars 3d Reboots Axed

Plans to bring the Star Wars movies back to cinemas in 3D have been axed to allow movie bosses to concentrate on making a new installment in the sci-fi franchise.

In 2010, creator George Lucas and his Lucasfilm company announced plans to revive all six of the movies in the new format, starting with prequel Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace, which made a healthy $102.7 million (£64.2 million) at the global box office when it was re-released in 3D last year (12).

However, Lucasfilm has since been bought out by bosses at Disney, who are focusing on plans to shoot a new seventh installment in the series, so plans to release the other five films in 3D have been put on hold.

A statement from Lucasfilm reads, "Focusing on Episode Vii, Lucasfilm Postpones Episodes Ii and IiI 3D... Lucasfilm has decided to postpone this fall's scheduled release of Star Wars Episodes Ii and IiI in 3D. Given the recent development that we are moving forward with a new Star Wars trilogy, we will now focus 100 per cent of our efforts on Star Wars: Episode Vii in order to ensure the best possible experience for our fans. We will post further information about our 3D release plans at a later date."
