Stars To Pay Tribute To Bond Composer Barry

Stars including Dame Shirley Bassey, Sir Michael Caine and former James Bond actor Timothy Dalton have signed up to appear at a tribute concert dedicated to late 007 composer John Barry.

The Oscar-winning musician, who wrote iconic theme tunes for 11 Bond films including From Russia with Love and You Only Live Twice, died at the age of 77 in January (11) after suffering a fatal heart attack in New York.

A memorial show will be held in his honour at London's Royal Albert Hall this summer (11) and organisers have announced a star-studded line-up.

The concert will feature performances from Bassey, who famously sang Barry's Diamonds Are Forever and Goldfinger, and tenor Alfie Boe, while the composer's music will be played by Britain's Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in a programme devised by Barry's widow Laurie and current Bond music chief David Arnold.

The event will also see tributes from Caine, Dalton and Sir George Martin, who scored the soundtrack for 1973 Bond film Live and Let Die while Barry was on hiatus.

Proceeds from the show will help fund a film composition scholarship set up in Barry's name at London's Royal College of Music.

The concert will take place on 20 June (11).

What an honour for John Barry, an incredible composer. Dame Bassey, Sir Michael Caine and Timothy Dalton’s accepting the invitation, quickly with no qualms, shows true love for Mr. Barry. I respect the aforementioned; however, as “James Bond” and actor extraordinaire “class act” personifies Timothy. He was the “first” TRUE “James Bond,” making the character come to life by bleeding, crying, emotions showing with no dialogue. Before filming LIVING DAYLIGHTS, the 4TH highest box office gross in the “Bond” legacy, read Sir Ian Fleming’s novels over and again was seen “to the side” reading them again. In summary, Mr. Dalton’s character stands above many. All the songs written by John Barry were for Sir Sean Connery “Bonds.” It’s sad to think, he’d say no to honour a person who helped make him a star. Again, Timothy shines!
