Comedian Steve Carell, actress Mia Farrow and rocker Nathan Followill are among the stars who have taken a moment to salute retired members of the U.S. military in observance of Veteran's Day (11Nov12).
Both Carell and Farrow have family links to the Armed Forces and they made sure to celebrate the contributions of all armed service veterans on Sunday, giving Twitter.com mentions to relatives who have served their country.
The 40-Year-Old Virgin star wrote, "Proud of my dad, Edwin Carell, Wwii, 100th Infantry. Thank you troops, past and present", while Farrow shared a picture of her sibling alongside the message, "Deepest gratitude to all who served and to their families. Photo: my brother Mike, a US Marine".
Rocker and activist Tom Morello expressed his gratitude to the armed forces by tweeting, "Happy Veterans Day! My uncle fought fascists in Wwii... Nothings (sic) more courageous than a soldier who stands against an unjust war", and Kings of Leon drummer Followill posted, "Happy Veterans Day and thanks to all who have served and are currently serving. I'll never take my freedom for granted."
Actresses Courteney Cox, Octavia Spencer and Alyssa Milano and country stars Trace Adkins and Faith Hill also paid tribute to retired soldiers, while across the Atlantic, Star Trek actor Simon Pegg remembered his ancestors as Britain marked Remembrance Day, in honour of those lost in the line of duty since World War One.
In a message on his Twitter page, Pegg wrote, "Remembering my great uncles, Ruben, Jesse and Harry today. All lost in the great war, all under 25. You'd think we would learn."
Meanwhile, Blink-182 bassist Mark Hoppus, who is currently in the U.K., marked both holidays in his Twitter salute to the military both at home and away.
He tweeted, "Veterans/Remembrance Day. Respect and thanks to those who served, and to those still in harm's way, come home safe and soon."
