John Mellencamp - Stars Kick Off Guthrie's Centennial Celebrations
John Mellencamp, Hanson, The Flaming Lips and Jackson Browne were among the performers who kicked off a celebration of Woody Guthrie's life at a centennial concert in Oklahoma on Saturday (10Mar12).
The folk legend died in 1967 at the age of 55 and a number of celebrations have been planned to mark the upcoming 100th anniversary of his birth on 14 July (12).
The events kicked off with a star-studded concert in his native state on Saturday, with numerous stars taking to the stage at Tulsa's Brady Theater including Johnny Cash's singer daughter Rosanne, bluegrass star Del MCCoury and Jimmy LaFave.
The event was hosted by Guthrie's son, Arlo, and also included a presentation of a Grammy Museum plaque to the star's 90-year-old sister, Mary Jo. The plaque is to be installed in Guthrie's hometown of Okemah.
Another concert commemorating Guthrie will take place at Club Nokia in Los Angeles on 14 April (12) and the line-up includes Kris Kristofferson, Tom Morello, David Crosby and Graham Nash.
