Starr Hails Bob Dylan

RINGO STARR has lavished praise on rock legend BOB DYLAN for lasting so long in the music industry. The former Beatles drummer admires musicians who can match his own band's longevity, and cites Dylan as a prime example - despite his unpredictability. He says, "Seeing Bob many times, and you get what Bob gives you. The last time I saw him, it was hard to recognise the songs. But the time before, he was clear as a bell. "Bob is great. He just had a No. 1 record and that's what it's about."

Bob Dylan, for all his recordings, is predominantly a live act. It is unrealistic to expect him to go on night after night peforming the same songs as they were recorded (depending on which recording you ve heard). I saw him two consecutive nights in Glasgow in the early 90s and remarked that it could have been two different guys up there. If he wants to play around with HIS songs that's HIS perogative. His backing bands know the score as do his REAL fans who also know the lyrics and can sing along once we ve "clicked in". Personally I think it's hilarious that he keeps us guessing whilst experimenting to break the monotony of life on the road, and, I suspect, amuse himself whilst he's at it. Other people change his songs so why shouldn't he? For all the adulation and expectations, Bob is neither a puppet nor a robot. I'm generally happy with whatever mood he happens to be in. LIVE music is performed by real, live, people and anyone who doesn't appreciate that should stay at home and listen to their record collection.
